An Exercise of the Week Post About the FMS Hurdle Step Assessment by Chanhassen Personal Trainer & Weight Loss Expert Justin Yule

I’ve really enjoyed sharing our Exercise of the Week videos each Friday, and the feedback has been great! :-)

As we kick off a new month, I’m going to start off with another video that breaks down one of the Functional Movement Screens (FMS).  This month we’re going to address the Hurdle Step.

Truth be told, most of the people I see score just fine on this assessment.  Although there are some exceptions (really tight hips and/or poor balance), and if you’re a runner or like to do lower body plyometric exercises you should definitely perform this screen:

Now, if you score a 1, asymmetry, or have pain in this assessment running and jumping are not a good fit for your training program.  Every step you take will be “off kilter”and jumping will be off balance (on the way up and with your landing – NOT GOOD).

Here is a simple daily routine you can do to improve your Torso Stability Push-up (yes, I purposely include push-ups on your knees as one of the exercises):

Let me know if you have any questions in the comment section below…
